Pornographic positions

There is a surprising amount of discussion and debate about pornography that remains abstract, as if we could talk meaningfully about the products of an industry without ever acknowledging what they are. It is important, though not always pleasant, to grapple not just with the idea of the pornographic but the actual content of contemporary mass-marketed heterosexual pornography.

The pornography industry produces two major styles of films, “features” (the two most well known feature productions companies are Vivid and Wicked) and “gonzo” (produced by many companies, including Evil Angel, Anabolic, and Red Light District). Pornographic features mimic, however badly, the conventions of a Hollywood movie. There is some minimal plot, character development, and dialogue, all in the service of presenting the explicit sex. Gonzo films have no such pretensions; they are simply recorded sex, often in a private home or on some minimal set. These films often start with an interview with the woman or women about their sexual desires before the man or men enter the scene.

Whether analyzing feature or gonzo movies, a few basic themes are common to all mass-marketed heterosexual pornography:
(1) all women at all times want sex from all men;
(2) women like all the sexual acts that men perform or demand; and
(3) any woman who does not at first realize this can be easily turned with a little force. Such force is rarely necessary, however, for most of the women in pornography are the “nymphomaniacs” that men fantasize about.
The message of pornography is not just that women choose this kind of sex, but that it is their nature, a part of being a woman. For example, the text of banner for the website suckmebitch.com, which promises:

“...raw & uncut real home blowjob videos,” expresses this succinctly: “Make her feel like a real woman. Just say the magic words … Suck Me Bitch.”

In the pornographic world, a female person becomes a woman — a real woman — by taking her role as a “Dirty Little Cock Sucker.”
Feminist legal scholar and activist Margaret Baldwin sums it up accurately:
In pornography, the world is a balanced and harmonious place. The sexual requirements of women and men are perfectly congruent, symbiotic in relation and polar in definition: women live to be fucked, men inevitably fuck.
It really is that simple because pornography is that formulaic. Whatever the level of plot and character development, the focus is on the sexual acts, and those acts proceed in predictable fashion. In the more sedate features, a short period of the man performing oral sex on the woman is followed by a longer period of her performing oral sex on him, followed by vaginal penetration in a variety of positions. In some features, vaginal will be followed by anal penetration, before the “cum shot” or “money shot” — the man ejaculating onto the woman’s body or into her mouth. The vocalizations in features vary somewhat. Women almost always ask/beg the men to fuck them, often encouraging them to penetrate them harder. The men’s performance can vary from relatively benign vocalizations of their pleasure to the more aggressive “take this /you know you want it” script.

In gonzo, those same acts are featured, but typically are performed in rougher fashion, often with more than one man involved, and with more explicitly denigrating language that marks women as sluts, whores, cunts, nasty bitches, etc. In gonzo there also is an expanded repertoire of sexual acts, including several distinctive sex practices that are, if not unique to pornography, certainly far more prevalent in pornography than in the world off camera. Those include the double penetration, double anal, double vag, and ass-to-mouth.

Understanding pornography’s use of those acts requires discussion of the role of anal sex in pornography. Prior to the late 1980s and ‘90s, anal sex was not routine in mainstream pornography. As legal constraints on pornography relaxed in the mid-1970s and the normalizing of pornography began, pornographers started to look for ways to make their products edgy, and the first place they went was anal sex. Why anal penetration of women?

Anal sex can be pleasurable for the person being penetrated. Certainly the frequency of the practice among gay men suggests that is the case, and some women also enjoy the practice. But it’s also clear that most women do not seek out anal penetration, and therein lies the answer: Pornography, with its overwhelming male clientele, moves toward sexual acts that most women in day-to-day life do not seek out because most women find them either not pleasurable, painful, or denigrating. Those are the very same acts that men seem to find intensely pleasurable to watch in pornography. Here’s how one pornography industry executive explained the appeal of anal sex to me:
Essentially, it comes from every man who’s unhappily married, and he looks at his wife who just nagged at him about this or that or what-not, and he says, “I’d like to fuck you in the ass.” He’s angry at her, right? And he can’t, so he would rather watch some girl taking it up the ass and fantasize at that point he’s doing whatever girl happened to be mean to him that particular day, and that is the attraction, because when people watch anal, nobody wants to watch a girl enjoying anal.
No doubt this executive overstates the case; there are many films in which women appear to enjoy anal penetration, indicating many men enjoy the image of women getting pleasure that way. But it’s also true that many films portray women enduring, not enjoying, anal penetration. Sometimes this is made explicit, as in the website AnalSuffering.com, which promises:
“Nothing makes these sluts hornier and nastier than the pain caused by a huge cock ramming up their tight asses.”
By the late 1990s, anal penetration in heterosexual pornography had become routine — not all movies included it, but it was no longer unusual. The industry looked for other acts that could push the conventional sexual script, without venturing into territory that would bring increased pressure from law enforcement.

Doubling patriarchal pleasure

There is a wide variety of sexual acts that one can find in pornography, but the ones that have become commonplace in gonzo pornography by the early 2000s — and slowly began to find their way into features — include:
— double penetration, known as “DP” in the industry, in which, a woman is penetrated vaginally and anally at the same time.
— double anal, in which a woman is penetrated anally by two men at the same time.
— double vag, in which a woman is penetrated vaginally by two men at the same time.
— ass-to-mouth, known as “ATM” in the industry, in which a man removes his penis from a woman’s anus and places it in her mouth or the mouth of another woman without cleaning.
I am not a woman, and so I obviously cannot experience a DP or a double vag. I have not experienced a double anal or ATM. So, while I speak without knowing how such acts feel, it is uncontroversial that the vast majority of women do not seek out such practices in their lives. From watching these acts on screen, it’s also reasonable to assume — even though women performers routinely say they enjoy them — that they are hard on a woman’s body and require conditioning to endure. Belladonna, a well-known gonzo pornography performer, in a 2003 interview with ABC News described such scenes this way:
You have to really prepare physically and mentally for it. I mean, I go through a process from the night before. I stop eating at 5:00. I do, you know, like two enemas. The next morning I don’t eat anything. It’s so draining on your body.
The most plausible explanation of the popularity of these acts is that men know that women in the world outside pornography do not want to engage in such acts and, unless forced, will not participate. Men know that — and they find it sexually arousing to watch them in part because of that knowledge.

Finally, consider ATM. In physical terms, it’s difficult to imagine that a man’s pleasure is enhanced by a woman taking his penis in her mouth directly from her anus or another woman’s anus; that act does not increase the physical stimulation of nerve endings. So, why do it? Again, the most plausible explanation is clear: To suck a man’s penis directly from an anus is unhygienic and potentially dangerous. When a woman does it, she is either expressing disregard for her own health or accepting the man’s implicit imposition of the idea that her health is of no concern. Either way, she is less than fully human.

Even someone from the industry, writing as the “Anal Advisor,” concedes there are health risks in the practice. In response to a letter about the rise of ATM in pornography, she writes:
Taking your dick out of a woman’s ass and directly shoving it into her mouth may make for exciting porn, but, in real life, it can be problematic. Bacteria lives in the butt that may not peacefully exist in the mouth, and could lead to an infection. No matter how squeaky clean her rectum may be, chances are there are at least trace amounts of fecal matter which may end up on your dick — do you really want to make her suck that off? Would you put it in your own mouth?
Even more interesting is the second half of her response, in which she acknowledges the intensity of some men’s desire for ATM:
I have a better idea. Fuck her in the ass til she’s right on the edge of orgasm, or you are. Order her to get on her knees and close her eyes. Talk to her, tell her she better open up her mouth for your cock. Have an anti-bacterial baby wipe stashed nearby, and quietly grab it, slide it over your cock, then toss it. Now proceed with sticking your rod in her mouth, keeping the fantasy intact, but keeping it clean for everyone involved.
In other words, it’s fine to want to treat a woman as less than fully human and to find sexual pleasure in it, but please do it in a way that is hygienic.

The trends in contemporary pornographic movies are quite clear: The men who consume pornography enjoy watching sexual activity in which women are less than fully human. Men like to watch sexual activity in which women are treated with cruelty. Lots of men like this. The practices I describe are found in films in the mainstream of a pornography industry that is increasingly accepted in the mainstream of U.S. society.

Where is it all heading? Here’s the assessment of one of the top executives in the industry, Steve Hirsch of Vivid Entertainment: “Not only does hard-core porn not shock people today, but I think they want more — harder and harder and harder and harder.”

My new book, Money Shot: The Wild Nights and Lonely Days in the Black Porn Industry, just came out this month and talks about a LOT of the same issues. Gonzo is the main style in black porn and I spent two years profiling the people who produce and act in the movies. Check it out at Amazon.com.

equality and inequality
the message is that men and women are not equal in this sphere, and that to treat them equal in this sphere is to treat them wrongly. stereotypically, men want sex more than women; but if this stereotype holds, which tendency (more sex vs. less sex) is "right" and which should be catered to? and how does this argument for protective inequality jibe with the remainder of feminist thought, which is that men and women are equal and should be treated equally? if women are to pick and choose the spheres in which they would like to be treated equally (jobs, pay, roles) and unequally (military, dates, porn), is this equitable? Or is equality not actually the goal?

Pornography parallels Hollywood
I think that many Hollywood movies are no different. In horror films, evil men stalk women who behave like they are 6 years old with no sense of judgment, and can only scream at the right time. In romantic films, the woman submits to the decent, persistent man. And in many films, women are often included as eye candy.

I think we also have to be careful not to over-generalize. ALL films are contrived, choosing a subject and plot that will SELL. They are not necessarily meant to be representative of real life. In reality, most men and women do not have group sex. And conversely, there are some that do.

Focusing on these kinds of porn is like generalizing from horror or slasher mainstream films that all movies are violent and degrading. There is plenty of porn out there that shows men and women having loving caring gentle sex without the degrading parts that jensen is talking about. I would agree that there is a lot of bad porn out there that I would not want to watch but by the same token I would not want to watch 90 per cent of mainstream movies either because they are too violent or upsetting. Some men may be turned on by violent porn just as some people like watching violent mainstream movies, but I believe many more like more gentle loving romantic films. For a more balanced view read "Watching Sex" by David Loftus - he interviewed many men to find out what they really like in porn.

What does it mean to be less than human?
This article exhibits most of the typical flaws in anti-pornography rhetoric. In fact, there's nothing original in it at all. I certainly don't accept every act that appears in American porn, but I object to this author's arguments and evidence.

For one, the ATM section of this article takes the words of "Anal Advisor" out of context. True, Tristan Taormino is ano-normative--she often writes as though it is a duty to try receiving anal sex for both men and women. That said, she does not 'concede' that ATM is unsafe in the article referenced by the author--she flat out says so. More importantly, this article is an advice-column. She is responding to someone who, going by the byline "Curious But Scared," states that his girlfriend "saw some ass to mouth scene (ATM) in a porn movie and went crazy for it. Now she wants to do it. I am afraid that it might be unsafe for one or both of us. We’ve only been dating a short time and I have the feeling that the reason why she likes anal sex so much is that she actually likes shit" (http://www.puckerup.com/?tpid=...e=template). So, far from being a case of male misogyny--an expression of the writer's desire to harm and degrade a woman--the letter expresses a man's desire to protect his partner from the danger inherent in her own desires.

Now, of course there are cases of men who want to sexually-degrade women. (It is interesting that the author could not find an example of this.) But does that directly connect to the way men consume porn? Do all men consume it in the same way? Do men want to do what they see on the screen? I like watching women enjoy anal sex, or even DPs, on screen because the extra preparation and communication it requires (even in porn) makes it clear that the woman is sexually-present rather than indifferently participating in vaginal sex; but in real life anal sex is messy and has been better for my partner than me. And I wouldn't want to do a DP at all, since I do not want to do a threesome, but that does not mean that I can't enjoy watching them on screen. In other words: porn is not just a male fantasy of what women want; it's also a male fantasy of what men can do. I don't have two penises, so when my girlfriend said that she wanted to try a DP, I felt helpless. Moreover, just because I like to watch it does not mean that I want to do it. And just because I like to watch it in porn does not mean that I think of all women that way all the time. What an absurd thing to say!

That brings up another point--the old "in porn women exist to be fucked" saw. God, what a tired, old argument! (Out of curiosity, does anyone buy this anymore? Even the authors of such arguments must only do it out of habit, right?) Of course people in pornography films 'exist' to fuck and to be fucked! That is why they call it porn! In the State of the Union Address, the President 'exists' to give a speech! Does that de-humanize him? Does that lead people to believe that he has no other existence or mental state? I remember learning that my teacher existed outside of the classroom when I saw her grocery shopping. I was five years old. And to pretend that all women in all porn are the passive 'victims' of fucking is to ignore the content of just about every porn film ever made.

And not all men will watch the same porn movie in the same way. When a male actor starts spouting hateful speech, I turn off the volume. I.e.: just because something sells, does not mean that every consumer of it enjoys every single aspect of it in the same way, or at all. If my girlfriend wanted to be called a bitch during sex, it would be hard for me--since I don't sexualize violence. But I would do it for her. Would I be treating her as "less than human" if I indulged her? Just because a male actor degrades a woman on camera, does that mean he degrades women in that way all the time? Who is assuming that actors have no off-camera personalities now?

The weakest argument though, is the "anal sex requires preparation" one. Marathons are hard on people's bodies--a lot harder than DPs, anyway--and require a lot more preparation. Belladonna, the actress quoted by the author, enjoys anal penetration tremendously; for her to acknowledge the effort that goes into it does no more to discount her pleasure than a marathoner's acknowledgment that he or she was only able to win a race through training and diet.

I have debated porn quite a bit with friends, in conferences, on internet forums. At least once I would like to debate with someone who brings intellectual originality and honesty to the discussion. There are plenty of real issues to consider: the ethics of recruitment and contracting in the porn industry, the protections that should keep representations of sexual violence—even ethical ones—away from children without hampering their ability to learn about sex. Why waste more time on old crap like this?

Good god. Could this article be any more 1985? So trite.

Anyone who writes this drivel has obviously never "fucked" on either side of the dom/sub spectrum and obviously is either offended by the fact that some people do/have/enjoy fuck-ing and being fucked. Sex and violence are arousing for some, period for both men and women who are attracted to either role.

Is a Dominatrix dehumanizing men by dominating him? Ever seen a strap-on porn where woman pentrates a man?

The fact is our sexual instincts do stem from dominant and submissive roles and some people find pleasure in experimenting with those roles. This is the same tired puritanical shit that was poured into women's heads 10 years ago that tells them they shouldn't dress/feel/act sexy because it might "degrade" them.

Sexuallizing a women (or a man) doesn't degrade them. And some men/women find it exciting to be submissive or degraded. There doesn't mean there's anything wrong with that, it means you are free to express your desires.

As long as it's between consenting adults, why is htere such a problem?

Omg! Pr0n 1s b4d.

Dorks.

What about something for US?
I think there is a problem at the moment with the pornographic industry in that ALL porn seems to be aimed at men. All the movies and short clips I have searched through on sites like boysfood.com, i find to be pretty degrading to women. As a woman myself, I would say that I'm most defenitly not a prud, and enjoy quite alot of what I see on screen in my own life, however there is a big gap in the market for porn that women would enjoy too without having the following constants in porn:

-girl being called a bitch/slut/whore continuesly just because she likes sex. Does the guy who's pounding her get called this too?...No?...
- the camera always being focused on the girl, never the guy
-men who resemble pit ball terriors; how come all the women look like models...where are the male models??
-something where the woman actually ENJOYS what is happening rather than the scripted "mm yeah mmm yeah" which she obviously doesn't mean while some guy rams her up the ass

and etc....

I just think that there should be something for both sexes to enjoy, and I know alot of people will argue that alot of women like this sort of porn anyway - and yes we do, but what else is there on offer if we don't?...

This article is the same old same old
Come on...

"The men who consume pornography enjoy watching sexual activity in which women are less than fully human."

What a crock.

First off: it's anthropocentric. Some of my most beloved friends are "less than fully human." They aren't human at all. I don't love them any less. They are still beautiful creatures with beautiful, if murderous, minds and magnificant physical capabilities. The only reason they don't rule the earth is us. (I'm talking about cats)

Secondly, there are too many assumptions in here to even begin to list them all. Let me tackle just a few: have you ever considered that it just took the marketing organizations this long to figure out what guys want? It could be just as simple as "women generally won't do it, guys like it, it took us a while to figure that out."

Another thing you should probably consider is the fact that people don't generally watch a whole scene; they move to the part of the scene they want to watch and go from there. If you put something into a scene that someone doesn't like, all they have to do is skip over it. If you put something in the scene they do like, then maybe you've made another potential sale.

Generally: try using your left brain when you write articles like this.
