For Those Who Can’t Speak for Themselves – Part II
Wednesday, 10 March 2010 06:46
by Mel Seesholtz Ph.D.

It seems I was not the only one incensed by American Family Association biblical literalist Bryan Fischer’s Bible-based call to kill “Tilly” the orca. His Bronze Age thinking garnered international attention. So much so that on March 5, 2010 Mr. Fischer posted “Bible Ignored, Trainer Dies - Part II”:

It’s been rather surreal to see my little blog post/column of Feb. 25 take on a life of its own, and become the subject of endless and hysterical rants in the blogosphere. In addition, I was contacted today for interviews by the Chicago Tribune (whose reporter told me she’d read about it on the Daily Mail in London), and by radio stations in Alaska, Seattle, and L.A. Plus I have been chewed out by numerous animal rights zealots either via phone or email.

What apparently gave the story some legs is that I was falsely reported as calling for the stoning of the killer whale, when of course I did nothing of the sort. …
No, Mr. Fischer. That’s exactly what you called for by claiming Bronze Age biblical edicts should be carried out in the twenty-first century. You even quoted chapter and verse to support your call to kill. You did the same thing in your March 2, 2010 article “The Biblical Case For the Death Penalty”:

These are the words of God as recorded in Genesis 9:5-6:

5] “For your lifeblood I will require a reckoning…from his fellow man I will require a reckoning for the life of man.
6] Whoever sheds the blood of man,
By man shall his blood be shed, For God made man in his own image.”
God is here on record that capital punishment is morally necessary and right. He requires that it be carried out …
“Words of God”? No, Mr. Fischer. They’re the words of Bronze Age men with ulterior sociopolitical and theological motives who claimed to be speaking for “God” in order to control their tribe through a religion based on the murderous, vengeful “God” they’d conjured.

“For God made man in his own image” is backwards. Those Bronze Age tribal leaders made “God” in their own image: vindictive, vengeful and most of all, power-hungry. Read the first Commandment for verification: “And God spake all these words, saying, I am the Lord thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. Thou shalt have no other gods before me” (Exodus 20:1-3).

Jehovah was a local, tribal “God.” The First Commandment acknowledges that. He was not the only “God,” just the jealous “God” that demand to be worship first among “Gods” and mandated violent means to justify and procure that claim to the top spot. The Old Testament is filled with stories of Jehovah demanding murders and even genocide. What’s “surreal” is someone like Mr. Fischer who takes such Bronze Age stories and edicts verbatim and wants them applied in the twenty-first century.

Aside from calling for “Tilly’s” death for behavior that entertainment-crazed humans caused by incarcerating him, Mr. Fischer wants convicted humans killed swiftly, as the Bronze Age men who created the “God” and the Old Testament decreed. Once again, Mr. Fischer seems ignorant of advances made since then.

DNA evidence frees 100th death row inmate

4/10/2002 PHOENIX – as former death row inmate Ray Krone celebrated his first full day of freedom Tuesday by taking a swim and eating steak, national justice groups used his decade-long ordeal to press for an end to capital punishment.

Krone was freed from prison after serving 10 years for a murder he didn’t commit.

He is the 100th condemned American to be freed since the death penalty was reinstated in 1976 and, as such, instantly emerged as a poster child in the national debate. …
Since Mr. Krone, at least forty more death row inmates have been freed thanks to DNA evidence. But Mr. Fischer, armed with his Bible, wants death sentences carried out immediately. It seems Mr. Fischer is in love with biblical edicts to kill, and seems to have no problem at all with incarcerating, torturing and using animals for human entertainment. He also has a fairly wide reading audience that includes, no doubt, those who model their behavior on his. That can be a very deadly combination, as was seen recently in Philadelphia:

SPCA Says Dogfighting Up Because of Vick

05 March 2010 by Tony Hanson

SPCA authorities say dogfighting in Philadelphia has gone up dramatically over the past year and the authorities cite a Michael Vick factor.

The number of animal fighting investigations, the vast majority of them dogfighting, has gone up from 237 in 2008 to over 800 last year – three to four times more. George Bengal, director of investigations for the SPCA, says some of the owner offenders have been drawn to the sport by an idol.

“Michael Vick in my view definitely enters into the equation. A lot of the younger generation looks up to him as an idol and they idolize him and try to mimic the things he had done, which is not good.” …
Mr. Fischer justified killing “Tilly” and other animals by saying, “In a Judeo-Christian worldview, a human being has infinite, eternal value while an animal does not.” That’s a belief based on the murderous, vengeful “God” concocted by the writers of the Old Testament. It is clearly inappropriate for the twenty-first century, as are Mr. Fischer’s suggestions. Moreover, if the Judeo-Christian worldview maintains that every human being “has infinite, eternal value,” why would capital punishment exist at all? Most civilized countries in the Western world have done away with capital punishment. However, in countries where archaic religious edicts dictate civil law, executions especially of gays – flourish.

But then again, Mr. Fischer and his ilk seem to think gay people are like animals and should be seen as criminals and incarcerated, trained, and forced “to perform” as they’re told, or else. He made that very clear in his February 3, 2010 article “Why Homosexual Behavior Should Be Against the Law,” in which he advocated that homosexuality be outlawed and gays be jailed and forced into “ex-gay” therapies that every legitimate scientific, medical, psychological, and psychiatric professional organization in the United States has condemned as ineffective and dangerous. Given his fondness for capital punishments and as an advocate of Bronze Age thinking, no doubt Mr. Fischer would support the Old Testament mandate: “If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death. Their blood shall be upon them” (Lev. 20:13).

Funny how Mr. Fischer, a self-styled spokesman for the “Judeo-Christian worldview,” relies so heavily on the murderous, violent passages in the Old Testament while glossing over the message of Jesus: tolerance, compassion, kindness, and reverence for all living creatures. Is that so hard to understand?

If you have men who will exclude any of God’s creatures from the shelter of compassion and pity, you will have men who will deal likewise with their fellow men.
- St. Francis of Assisi
