The Vatican is still trying to divert attention from the FACT that for decades the Church’s hierarchy covered up child abuse and pedophilia by predator priests. The Holy See just can’t seem to see, so the same old diversionary tactics are still being used:
Pope's No. 2: Pedophilia linked to homosexuality Brad Haynes Associated Press Writer
SANTIAGO, Chile (AP) - The Vatican’s second-highest authority says the sex scandals haunting the Roman Catholic Church are linked to homosexuality and not celibacy among priests. Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, the Vatican’s secretary of state, made the comments during a news conference Monday in Chile, where one of the church’s highest-profile pedophile cases involves a priest having sex with young girls.
“Many psychologists and psychiatrists have demonstrated that there is no relation between celibacy and pedophilia. But many others have demonstrated, I have been told recently, that there is a relation between homosexuality and pedophilia. That is true,” said Bertone. “That is the problem.” [italics added]
The Associated Press report of the Cardinal’s statement left out a key line:
“Many psychologists, many psychiatrists have demonstrated that there is no relationship between celibacy and pedophilia but many others have demonstrated, I was told recently, that there is a relationship between homosexuality and pedophilia. That is true. I have the documents of the psychologists. That is the problem.” [italics added]

No, Cardinal Bertone. Gays and homosexuality are not the problem. And the pedophile priests are not celibate. The real issue is a corrupt church and the corrupt men who used religion to access and prey on children. The real issue is Church officials – including the pope– who knew of such behavior and covered it up, as they are still trying to do:
Connecticut bishops fight sex abuse bill April 11, 2010
by Jamie Guzzardo, CNN
Hartford, Connecticut (CNN) -- A bill in Connecticut’s legislature that would remove the statute of limitations on child sexual abuse cases has sparked a fervent response from the state’s Roman Catholic bishops, who released a letter to parishioners Saturday imploring them to oppose the measure. …
The proposed change to the law would put “all Church institutions, including your parish, at risk,” says the letter, which was signed by Connecticut's three Roman Catholic bishops.
The letter is posted on the Web site of the Connecticut Catholic Public Affairs Conference, the public policy and advocacy office of Connecticut's Catholic bishops. It asks parishioners to contact their legislators in opposition of the bill.
The “legislation would undermine the mission of the Catholic Church in Connecticut, threatening our parishes, our schools, and our Catholic Charities,” the letter says.
The bishops’ comment quoted in the last paragraph is pure, unadulterated self-interest and shows the contempt the Church hierarchy has for the victims of predator priests.
But the Catholic Church’s hierarchy has competition in the race to spread homophobia via lies and distortions: witness the April 15, 2010 tripe from Bryan Fischer, anti-gay pundit for the American Family Association:
Homosexual Supreme Court Justice? Not under any circumstances Date: 4/15/2010
Sen. John Cornyn has regrettably opened the door to the possibility of an openly gay Supreme Court justice, saying he’d “have to think about” it, and adding, “As long as it doesn’t interfere with their job, it’s not a particular issue.”
The problem with Cornyn’s position is that a gay judge’s sexual preference will, without any question whatsoever, “interfere with their job.” It's not possible for it to be otherwise.[link added]
Republican Texas Senator Cornyn (a former Texas Supreme Court justice) is definitely no friend of the gay community, but he was absolutely correct: justices’ sexual preference should not be an issue as long as it doesn’t “interfere with their job.” That’s called “professionalism,” a concept seemingly foreign to Mr. Fischer and his ilk.
Arrogant certitude and preposterous generalizations are the hallmark of fundamentalist religion and fascist politics, and Mr. Fischer personified both when he asserted “a gay judge’s sexual preference will, without any question whatsoever, interfere with their job. It's not possible for it to be otherwise.”
Aside from being incredibly insulting to gay people in general, Prophet Fischer claimed to know absolutely what every person will do in every situation: “It's not possible for it to be otherwise.” If I’m not mistaken, the Bible takes a very dim view of false prophets who make such patently false claims.
Substitute “heterosexual” or “Christian,” or “female,” or African American,” or “Hispanic,” or “Asian” for “gay,” and “religion,” or “gender,” or “race,” or “ethnicity” for “sexual preference” in Mr. Fischer’s statement and the absurdity – and bigotry – become even more obvious.
Using Mr. Fischer’s “logic,” a heterosexual justice should not be allowed to sit in judgment of any case involving heterosexual Americans or their civil rights. A Christian judge should not be allowed to sit in judgment of any case involving Christians or their civil rights. A female judge should not be allowed to sit in judgment of any case involving women or their civil rights. An African American judge should not be allowed to sit in judgment of any case involving African Americans or their civil rights. A Hispanic American judge should not be allowed to sit in judgment of any case involving Hispanic Americans or their civil rights. An Asian American judge should not be allowed to sit in judgment of any case involving Asian Americans or their civil rights.
Why? Because they will, according to Prophet Fischer and his baseball analogy, “give the home-field advantage to every legal team appearing before” them and it “will be impossible for the visiting team … to get a fair shake in his courtroom.”
Using Mr. Fischer’s “logic,” we could not have a judicial system at all because every prospective jurist could not be professional: “a _________ judge’s ____________ will, without any question whatsoever, interfere with their job. It's not possible for it to be otherwise.” Mr. Fischer seems to have no understanding of “professionalism.” But given his writing, that’s not at all surprising. On April 16 he posted a follow-up:
Bryan Fischer-Focal Point
Pedophilia is a homosexual problem Date: 4/16/2010
Pope Benedict’s lieutenant, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, touched of a firestorm of international criticism from the deviancy cabal this week when he stated that “there is a relationship between homosexuality and pedophilia.” …
“Deviancy cabal”? Funny. I thought “Christians” were supposed to be kind and understanding and tolerant, as was Jesus, and not call people they don’t like names meant to demean and hurt and incite hatred.
Mr. Fischer went on to cite the authority for his title: “The [Catholic] Church itself reports that ‘two-thirds of the incidents of abuse of adolescents by priests involve homosexual priests.’” With all due respect – which isn’t much at all – the Catholic Church is hardly believable in these matter, much less a reputable source.
Mr. Fischer’s other “source” is rabid anti-gay crusader Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council. Mr. Perkins recently claimed “about a third of all child sex abuse cases involve men molesting boys – and in one study, 86% of such men identified themselves as homosexual or bisexual.”
In “one study”? Cite your source, Mr. Perkins, and let’s see who did that singular study that conflicts with virtually all mainstream medical and psychological studies.
Mr. Fischer then chimed in with another of his sweeping, unsupported – and unsupportable – generalizations and accusations: “Homosexuals comprise less than three percent of the population, yet are responsible for one-third of all child sex abuse cases. There is an overwhelming correlation between homosexual preference and pedophilia. This is further evidence that homosexuality is in fact sexual deviancy.”
Truth of the matter is that every – that’s every – mainstream medical and psychological associations in the United States is firmly on record stating that homosexuality is not related to pedophilia. Moreover, as Dr. Kathryn Conroy, (then) assistant dean of Columbia University’s School of Social Work, pointed out in her September 24, 2005 New York Times piece in response to the Vatican’s earlier ban on “gay priests” following the initial exposure of the Church’s decades long cover-up of sexual abuse by priests in the United States, “What is forgotten in all of the hysteria about priest sexual abuse is that pedophilia is about a sexual attraction to children (most often, regardless of their sex) and about access. … Reliable studies show that pedophiles (those adults who sexually abuse children) are overwhelmingly heterosexual. In fact, homosexuals are statistically underrepresented as those who sexually abuse children. …”
Prophet Fischer’s conclusion – based on his false premises, grotesque generalizations and extremely biased sources – reiterated his former ignorance: “For this reason alone [homosexuals are pedophiles], no homosexual should be elevated to the United States Supreme Court.”
You have to wonder why people like Cardinal Bertone, Bryan Fischer and Tony Perkins who love to cast themselves as “good Christians” are so obsessed with propagating hate and discrimination. Fischer and Perkins also love to cast themselves as champions of “American family values,” yet they spend their time demeaning and denigrating other Americans and their families. Perhaps they just need someone to hate and feel superior to, or perhaps they just enjoy demeaning others and take pleasure in the difficulties others experience as a result of their actions and words. Schadenfreude.
Remember the old saying “actions speak louder than words”? Given who and what the Vatican and Church officials, Bryan Fischer and Tony Perkins claim to be – as opposed to what they do – who are the real “Deviancy Cabal”?
